كتب كتاب and the wedding: what goes on the invitation

Most Egyptian couples have two occasions and one invitation problem. The كتب كتاب is the marriage itself; the فرح is the celebration. Guests genuinely cannot always tell which one they have been invited to — here is how to make it obvious.

They are two different things

The كتب كتاب is the religious contract — short, often at a mosque or at home, sometimes only close family. The فرح is the party. Some couples hold them the same night, some weeks apart, and some invite completely different people to each. All of that is normal, which is exactly why the invitation has to say which one it means.

Same night: one invitation, two times

If both happen the same evening, one invitation works — but give each its own time and place, even when the place is the same. A guest reading a single time cannot tell whether they are expected for the contract or only for the party, and that is the question hosts end up answering by phone, one guest at a time.

Different days, or different guest lists: send two

If the occasions fall on different days, or the كتب كتاب is family-only while the فرح is everyone, send two invitations. Digitally it costs nothing, the replies count separately, and nobody has to work out which half applies to them. One invitation covering two guest lists is the most reliable way to have someone arrive at a ceremony they were not invited to — and that awkwardness lands on the guest, not on you.

If only family is invited to the كتب كتاب

Say it plainly on the family invitation rather than hinting. Naming it as family-only is not rude; it is a kindness, because the alternative is a guest guessing wrong in either direction. And keep the كتب كتاب time off the invitation that goes to everyone — details create expectations whether or not you intended them to.

Common questions

Can I put both occasions on one invitation?
Yes, if they are the same evening and the same guests, with a separate time and venue for each. If the guest lists differ, two invitations are safer and cost nothing.
Do I need a separate invitation for family only?
If the كتب كتاب is family-only, yes. Otherwise those details reach people who were not invited to that part, and someone will act on them.
Which one is the actual wedding?
The كتب كتاب is the marriage contract — religiously and legally, that is the wedding. The فرح is the celebration of it. Most invitations treat the فرح as the main event simply because it is the one most guests attend.
