Printed or digital wedding invitations?

The printed card is still how many Egyptian families expect to be invited, and a digital invitation is how most guests actually find the details on the day. Neither is simply better. Here is what each does, and how to decide.

What a printed card gives you

A card in the hand says that someone thought of you. For grandparents, older relatives and some family friends, being handed a card is the invitation; a message is not quite the same thing. Cards are also kept: many families still have the ones from their own weddings. If those guests matter most to you, print for them.

What printing costs you

The price of the cards is only part of it. Printing needs the details final weeks early, and anything that changes afterwards — a hall, a time — means a phone call to everyone. The cards then have to be delivered by hand, which is days of visits. Guests abroad get a photo of the card at best. And a card cannot tell you who is coming: the replies still arrive by phone, one at a time.

What a digital invitation gives you

A link reaches everyone at once, in Cairo or in Toronto. It can carry what a card cannot: a map with directions, the time with its city for guests abroad, a countdown, and a reply button. Details can change after it is sent. And the replies come back counted, so you know how many to tell the hall.

Where digital falls short

It is easy to send and easy to miss. A link lost in a busy family group is not an invitation anyone feels they received, so send it to people directly, with a line of your own. And for some older guests a link will never carry the weight of a card, however beautiful it is.

What most families do now: both

Print a small number of cards for the guests who will value them most — grandparents, the closest elders — and send everyone else a digital invitation. Put the link, or a QR code that opens it, on the printed card too, so the people holding a card can still find the map and reply.

Common questions

Is it rude to invite someone with a link instead of a card?
Not to most guests any more, especially when the link comes with a personal message rather than being forwarded to a group. For the few elders who would mind, a card is a small expense.
How early should a digital invitation go out?
About three to four weeks ahead for guests in Egypt, and as soon as the date is fixed for guests abroad, who may need to book flights.
Can I add a QR code to my printed card?
Yes. Any QR generator can turn your invitation link into a code to print on the card; scanning it opens the invitation with the map and the reply button.
